Ministry Updates: White Shield, North Dakota Outreach/Children's Home Society of South Dakota/Dakotabilities

I was honored to be invited to sit in on lead guitar October 17-19 with the White Horse Ministry Band at an outreach in White Shield, North Dakota.  I was excited to visit the Three Affiliated Tribes/ Fort Berthed area as it is former home of the Klaudt Indian Family (I wrote the COG Evangel article on them). The White Horse Ministry Band I met in Mission SD and got to play with them at the Carpenter's Shop Pentecostal Church there on the Rosebud reservation. We had a wonderful time ministering in worship music there. I hope to get to play with them again. This is a Lakota-led Native Pentecostal church that is dynamic and moving in the power of the Spirit. Thanks to Steve and Louis for making this opportunity possible for me.

I have been working with a local orphanage/school that serves Lakota children in Sioux Falls called the Children's Home Society of South Dakota. They have a school/residential program in Sioux Falls and Rapid City. Children's Home Society of South Dakota serves over 2,000 children each year, primarily ages 4-13, through residential treatment, education, forensic interview and exam centers, foster care & adoption services, and prevention services. The majority of these children are victims of severe abuse or neglect. Emergency shelter and related services are provided for women and children who are victims of domestic violence.

Many of you are familiar with my work the last eight years, where I provided Movement Music for adults with Developmental Disabilities in Tennessee. Since I have been in South Dakota, I have made my rounds to various care centers (thanks to the help of Michelle Anderson) and now have a regular monthly music program at Dakotabilities in Sioux Falls, SD. They serve many Native Americans. I have also released a couple of new albums on Amazon Music and iTunes, one of which is entitled "Movers and Shakers" and is directed as movement music for children and adults, utilizing the great songs of A.P. Carter, Woody Guthrie and others. If you buy my music, you support this ministry.

I want to take this opportunity to thank all my new supporters, new and constant, for continuing to believe in me and the needs of Native Americans in South Dakota. If you ever have any questions about what I'm doing, or how to donate on the PayPal link here, please don't hesitate to contact me. I couldn't do this without you.

Dear Friends,

I am writing you to let you know my situation. I have about a thousand bucks left for living expenses and a gift from a donor is slow coming. I am scheduled to do a music camp on the rez in October, and I probably need 2 things. 1) expenses for the camp and 2) living expenses.

Just so you will know, here's what I have done in June and July:

Attended 6 major Lakota cultural events (Sundances, etc) in which my presence was honored by elders

Co-directed 1 Rodeo Camp were 100 Lakota family members and at risk youth attended

Helped direct 1 immersion class on Rosebud Reservation

preached and raised funds in 10 church services

performed 19 concerts which included 7 centers for elderly and disabled (at no cost yet)

As you can see, I've been busy. No pressure, but we "have not cause ask not" and I don't want to be absorbed by a FT job if the Lord wants me me to maintain a major presence among the Lakota. Couldn't have done it without you.

Blessings,
Corky

Camp Video

Again, some of you might not be aware of where I am working so this video depicts the very Lakota youth I work with, the people I co-direct the camps with (Shane and Noella RedHawk) and the camp (2014) in which we had the reconciliation experience between the Custer family and other Little Big Horn warrior descendants. My donate button is to the right of this blog. Thanks for your support!

Corky's Update August 2014

Hey everybody!

As things are unfolding here in South Dakota, I wanted to give you a sneak peek into what my year (into next year) is looking like. I'm in the middle of Sundance season out here in Lakota and boy, have I been getting my eyes full and learning a lot. I have only been in South Dakota since June 12 and have already been honored in great ways as the leaders have been opening their homes and hearts to me. Here's what my schedule will kinda look like:

Event
Date
Location
Basketball Camp
May
Mission SD
Rodeo Camp
June
Mission SD
Rosebud Immersion Course
July
Mission SD
Rodeo Camp
August
Mission SD
Family Camp
August
SD
Music Camp
October
Mission SD

This does not include another Native American camp that I will probably be helping to direct and it does not include any course I might be able to develop or teach for any seminary. I am going to try to go to Virginia and Alabama each quarter to see my family. Tickets home look like $450-500. These camps cost from $3,000 to $5,000 to put on. I will soon have detailed budgets, because I am applying to a couple of foundations for support. The music camp is coming up soon and I will be teaching guitar along with Lakota musicians teaching other instruments. These events serve at risk Lakota youth in the second poorest neighborhood in America having a 87% unemployment rate. Thanks to those of you that have asked how I was doing and sent support. Please let me know how I can answer any questions and THE DONATE BUTTON IS AT THE UPPER RIGHT OF THIS BLOG. IT GOES TO PAYPAL. If you prefer to mail a check, make it out to: Jack Alexander 1516 N. Maynard Lane Sioux Falls SD 57110. Love to all!

Ride Across The Rosebud Rodeo Camp 2014

Thanks to all our financial supporters, camp staff, instructors and all who helped to make the 2014 Ride Across The Rosebud Rodeo Camp a success. The camp was held at Old Ring Thunder in Mission, South Dakota June 16-18. Noella Redhawk and her crew fed about 100 every meal, so that gives you an idea of the size of the camp. Bull Riding Instructors were Mike (PBR World Champ) and Dennis Lee, Barrel Racing instructor was Deb Cox and there was sessions by Genna Lou Buettner (equine therapist). The camp was a great success!
